Jesus lies at the heart of spiritual life and prayer
In the first article of a new series on spirituality, ABBOT MARK CAIRA from Nunraw Abbey explains the many benefits of monastic life.

The general reader may be forgiven for wondering what the monastic life has to offer them.  They probably see that there is a place for the monastic life in the Church and that monasteries may even be somewhere they may want to go to visit and perhaps even stay for a few days to unwind and recharge their batteries. But monasteries seem to have no immediate link with ordinary life in the world.  Monks and nuns, after all, are people who ‘leave the world’ to follow their vocation.  They live a life that is totally different from the rest of mankind and they should be left alone to get on with it.  - Is it as simple as that?

The Church is, in the main, immersed in ordinary society.  Christians are meant to live out their calling from God and to make the world a better place for their being a part of it.  It is true that we all don’t always live up to our calling. but Christ’s call is not to give up.  When we do fall down we need to see ourselves as we are, get up after each failure and walk more humbly before God.  Whatever befalls us we are called to continue anew following the Gospel through all the twists and turns of our lives.  That applies to monks and nuns as well as the rest of the Church and society.

We are all human.  We all receive the gift of life in Christ through our baptism.  Monks and nuns have a great deal in common with the rest of the Church for they bleed like the rest of mankind.  They get tired and hungry like everyone else.  And, as with everyone else, they have a need to know and love God.  It is good to remember these basic truths in this time of renewal in the Church as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vatican II.  Pope Francis has also been encouraging us in these months after his election to take up the challenge offered us by Christ and to joyfully engage in the life he offers us.



What is the point then of going to live in a monastery when God can be loved and served in ordinary everyday life in the Church and society?
One way of answering that question, perhaps, is take a closer look at the makeup of society in general.  In everyday life people choose to live in different ways.  They take different jobs, they make different choices in how and where they live.  They choose to marry one person and not another or they may decide to live singly.  We who believe that God is present in all of our lives know that he actively helps us to decide where our greater happiness in life lies.  
Everyone has a vocation be it to marriage or the single life.  Within either state of life they may feel called to other things as well, like nursing or teaching.  The monastic life in its various forms is one such option that some feel God is calling them to follow.  As in other vocations it needs prayer and enough time and space to discover if that is what God is really asking of them.
Being a priest or a religious has often been described as being a ‘higher’, or ‘better’, vocation than others.  The natural temptation was to seek this ‘higher’ vocation, according to that way of thinking, rather than what it was that God was offering. 
The understanding of Martha and Mary in the gospel gives a good insight into the question of vocation.  We are often told quite clearly that, to quote the Gospel, ‘Mary had chosen the better part’.  That seems to put Martha in her place.  But, it is interesting to note that in the calendar of saints, on the 29 July, the feast of St Martha, the Cistercian Order celebrates not just Martha but also that of her sister, Mary, and Lazarus her brother.  In a commentary on this feast, St Bernard tells us that a monastic community can profitably learn from all three of these saints and not just from the ‘contemplative’ Mary.  In a monastery monks need to work and they suffer illness, as much as to pray and to do other things that are necessary for the normal organising of life lived together..
There are many God-given vocations in the Church.  The only perfect one for us is the one that God calls us to live.  Often we find it difficult to find out what that means for ourselves. 

Life in a monastery is different from what most would regard as normal.  And yet, when you put aside the fact that monks live mostly within the confines of the monastery and with a set pattern to their life, what they do from day to day is what most people already do outside the monastery.   Besides their time for prayer, they work and rest.  There is the daily upkeep and cleaning of the abbey to be seen to; there are meals to be prepared.  Newcomers to the community need training into the spirit and understanding of this life they have chosen and to be shown when necessary the practical day to day organising of the community life.  There are also the physical needs of those who are unwell and the elderly to be taken care of.  So, monks may be ‘out of the world’ in one sense but they are very much grounded in the needs and realities of everyday life. 
The early Cistercians, in the twelfth century used their energies and talents to build their monasteries and set about reclaiming the uncultivated land around them.  Their ingenuity was put to good use in all of this.  Their lives were very much rooted in the world that God created.  Their minds and hearts were centred on God.  But it was Jesus, the Word made man, that lay at the heart of their lives and prayer.  That is the lifestyle that has been handed down to the present day Cistercians.  Perhaps we can consider that in some detail at a future date.

A monastery that is often visited by pilgrims to the Holy Land was attacked by vandals on Tuesday, 4 September. In the early hours of the morning, the door of the Cistercian (Trappist) monastery in Latroun was burnt and anti-Christian graffiti was sprayed on the walls.
In a Declaration the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land leaders said: "The monks of Latroun have dedicated their lives to prayer and hard work. The monastery is visited by hundreds of Jewish Israelis each week and they are received with love and warmth by the monks. A number of the monks have learnt Hebrew and promote mutual understanding and reconciliation between Jews and Christians, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
"Sadly, what happened in Latroun is only another in a long series of attacks against Christians and their places of worship. What is going on in Israeli society today that permits Christians to be scapegoated and targeted by these acts of violence?
"Those who sprayed their hateful slogans, expressed their anger at the dismantlement of the illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank. But why do they vent this anger against Christians and Christian places of worship? What kind of "teaching of contempt" for Christians is being communicated in their schools and in their homes? And why are the culprits not found and brought to justice?
"This morning, the Christians in Israel are asking many questions as they grieve and seek consolation and assurances. The time has come for the authorities to act to put an end to this senseless violence and to ensure a "teaching of respect" in schools for all those who call this land home.
Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good? 
Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it 
(Psalm 34:12-14)

Friday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time

He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. . . .
 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house."
And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.


The Monks wary of the conventional practices, was the theme taken up by the Abbot  General.

        Raphael Arnáiz Barón was born in Burgos (Spain) April 9, 1911, into a prominent, deeply Christian family. He was baptised and confirmed in Burgos and began his schooling at the Jesuit college in the same city where, in 1919, he was admitted to first Communion.
        It was at this time that he had his first experience of illness: persistent fevers due to colibacillosis forced him to interrupt his studies. To mark his recovery, which he attributed to a special intervention of the Virgin Mary, his father took him to Zaragoza and consecrated him to the Virgin of Pilar. This experience, which took place in the late summer of 1921, profoundly marked Raphael.
        When the family moved to Oviedo, he continued his secondary schooling with the Jesuits there, obtaining a diploma in science. He then enrolled in the School of Architecture in Madrid, where he succeeded in balancing his studies with a life of fervent piety.
        Possessing a brilliant and eclectic mind, Raphael also stood out because of his deep sense of friendship and his fine features. Blessed with a happy and jovial nature he was also athletic, had a gift for drawing and painting as well a love for music and the theatre. But as he matured, his spiritual experience of the Christian life deepened.
        Although the study of architecture required a great deal of hard work and discipline, at that time he began the practice of making a long daily visit to the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel of "Caballero de Gracia". He even joined the Nocturnal Adoration Association, and faithfully took his turn before the Blessed Sacrament.
        In this way his heart became well disposed to listening, and he perceived an invitation from God to lead the contemplative life.
        Raphael had already been in contact with the Trappist monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas, and he felt strongly drawn to this place, responding to his deepest desires. In December of 1933 he suddenly broke off his professional studies and on January 16, 1934 entered the monastery of San Isidro.
        After the first months of the noviciate and his first Lent, which he lived with great enthusiasm, embracing all the austerities of Trappist life, God mysteriously chose to test him with a sudden and painful
infirmity: a serious form of diabetes mellitus which forced him to leave the monastery immediately and return to his family in order to receive the proper care.
        Barely recovered, he returned to the monastery, but his illness forced him to leave the monastery for treatment again and again. But whenever he was absent he wanted to return, responding faithfully and generously to what he understood to be a call from God.
        Sanctified by his joyful and heroic fidelity to his vocation, in his loving acceptance of the Divine will and the mystery of the Cross, in his impassioned search for the Face of God, fascinated by his contemplation of the Absolute, in his tender and filial devotion to the Virgin Mary-"the Lady", as he liked to call her-his life came to an end on April 26, 1938. He was barely 27 years old. He was buried in the monastery cemetery, and later in the Abbey church.
        The fame of his sanctity rapidly spread beyond the walls of the monastery. The example of his life together with his many spiritual writings continue to spread and greatly profit those who get to know him. He has been described as one of the great mystics of the twentieth century.
        On August 19, 1989, the Holy Father John Paul II, on World Youth Day at Santiago de Compostella, proposed him as a model for young people today, and beatified him on September 27, 1992.
        Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on October 11, 2009 and presented him as a friend and intercessor for all the faithful, especially for the young.

 Xavier Beauvois'  award-winning film Of Gods and Men has just been released on DVD. It is Catholic cinema at its best - beautifully filmed, with a haunting soundtrack, sensitive performances and a gripping human story that deals with faith, community, ecumenism, and the meaning of vocation.

Set in a monastery in the Atlas Mountains in Algeria, it is based on the true story of a group of Cistercian monks who got caught up in the Muslim fundamentalist uprising in the mid 1990s.  They are a contemplative order, gathering for Mass and singing the Office throughout the day, studying and working quietly in the kitchen and gardens. But they also have strong bonds of friendship in the Muslim community in which they live. One monk, Brother Luc, (Michael Lonsdale), runs a medical clinic for the villagers - he also has a useful stock of children's shoes.  They sell their honey at the market and are invited to attend village celebrations. The Superior, Brother Christian, played by Lambert Wilson, studies the Koran and is friends with the local Mullah.

When a group of Croatian workers are murdered, the authorities urge the monastery to accept a military guard, but they refuse,  because the villagers don't have any protection. As more foreigners are killed the monks are urged to leave, and they deliberate slowly and carefully over this. One tells the villagers they are “birds on a branch, not sure whether to fly”, but the villagers tell them they are the branch itself, providing protection from the chaos beyond. Finally the monks unanimously decide to stay in solidarity with their Muslim friends.

This group of middle aged and elderly men are very endearing and totally believable. There is a very touching scene when one elderly monk falls asleep in bed with his glasses on, book in hand, and his brother monk gently removes them and covers him with a blanket.  Lambert Wilson gives a masterful performance as leader of the community; his inner struggles play in silence on his features.

The tension builds when a group of Muslim fighters break into the monastery just before Christmas Midnight Mass and Fr Christian calmly tells them that he can't help them because it is a sacred day. He quotes from the Koran and the fighters leave them to continue their celebration.

In another gut wrenching episode the monks continue to sing while a helicopter gunship swoops round and round over the rooftop.  One says that "staying here is as mad as becoming a monk in the first place."

Near the end, Brother Luc decides  to serve wine and play a record of Swan Lake during their evening meal. The camera gently moves around the table playing on the smiles and tears of the men's faces in a scene which is the moral and emotional heart of a remarkable film.

March 30, 2011 : Brother Aidan Hunt. Born in 1934 in Isleworth (England), he entered Nunraw in 1960 and made his solemn profession in 1966. Brother was 76 years old and had been in monastic vows for 47 years when the Lord called him.

This book tells their story, but also tells the story of twelve other priests and religious sisters who, like the Monks of Tibherine, had courageously chosen to stay in Algeria despite the threat, and who ultimately paid for their dedication with their lives. Drawing on letters, journals, and his own interviews with people who knew the nineteen religious, the author shows how they operated schools, performed vital medical assistance, sponsored community gardens, taught trades, prepared students for state examinations, and maintained libraries mainly in poor neighborhoods and rural villages.
