Lumen Fidei: Pope Francis. Day Seven of Christian Unity Week

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Day Seven: Together... we belong to Christ
Isaiah envisioned a day when Egyptians and Assyrians would worship together with Israel as God’s people. Christian unity belongs to the design of God for the unity of all humanity, and indeed of the cosmos itself. We pray for the day when we will worship together in one faith and one Eucharistic fellowship.
We are blessed by the gifts of various church traditions. Recognising those gifts in each other impels us towards visible unity.
Our baptism unites us as one body in Christ. While we value our particular churches, Paul reminds us that all who call on the name of the Lord are with us in Christ for we all belong to the one body. There is no other to whom we can say, "I have no need of you" (1 Cor 12:21).

Dear Father Donald,

Here is the text with which I hope you will not be disappointed.
Outside a strong wind is blowing.
On Monday the Sisters take me on a trip to see a geyser and a waterfall and something else. Things I have   seen before. I just know the road between Stykkisholmur and Reykjavik.

Blessings from

Dear Father Donald,
Here is a second poem of a different sort.
Just to say that you asked me to write a poem on Pope Francis's ([lus Pope Benedict's) encyclical..
Well I looked at the text after I downloaded it (and we had a visit from the Bishop and then exposition). I  have written some lines even though the result is long and complex.
When I have prepared the sermon for next Sunday to send to the translators, I will type it out improving and excising where necessary and I hope to send it to you before gong to bed tonight. For Heather as well please!
Blessings and greetings to al your brethren!
fr Edward

Lumen Fidei: A Summary on Pope Francis' First Encyclical

Pope Francis has released his first encyclical along with some help from Pope Benedict XVI who completed most of the draft before he resigned from the Papacy.
First, this encyclical is fantastic. I think the Church will be thinking, praying, and quoting this one for a very long time. The Church, especially in the West, is hungry for a renewal of the faith. During this Year of Faith, this encyclical on faith is a tremendous addition to the conversation that is going on throughout the world.
Second, the purpose of this blog post is to give a summary of the encyclical. After its release, there will be plenty of news articles about the encyclical that will report a few of the major themes or quotes of the document.
[Follow Pope Alarm on Twitter or Like us on Facebook to receive to get these quotes and share them with others].
Others will want to read the entire document, but mig - - - - -

Pope Francis will lead a worldwide hour of Eucharistic

While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many."
Where the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is not observed as a holy day, it is assigned to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday, which is then considered its proper day in the calendar.
Please see this special section on Corpus Christi.

Worldwide Holy Hour

Tomorrow, Sunday, June 2, Pope Francis will lead a worldwide hour of Eucharistic adoration the Vatican has announced.

On that date, cathedrals all across the world will hold an hour of Eucharistic adoration at the same time, inviting the faithful to pray for the Pope's intentions. The worldwide session of adoration will take place from 5 to 6 Sunday afternoon in Rome, and cathedrals worldwide will synchronize their vigils to match that time. The Pope has asked the universal Church to pray for two intentions during the hour of adoration:

1.    For the Church spread throughout the world and united today in the adoration of the Most Holy Eucharist as a sign of unity. May the Lord make her ever more obedient to hearing his Word in order to stand before the world `ever more beautiful, without stain or blemish, but holy and blameless.' That through her faithful announcement, the Word that saves may still resonate as the bearer of mercy and may increase love to give full meaning to pain and suffering, giving back joy and serenity.

2.    For those around the world who still suffer slavery and who are victims of war, human trafficking, drug running, and slave labour. For the children and women who are suffering from every type of violence. May their silent scream for help be heard by a vigilant Church so that, gazing upon the crucified Christ, she may not forget the many brothers and sisters who are left at the mercy of violence. Also, for all those who find themselves in economically precarious situations, above all for the unemployed, the elderly, migrants, the homeless, prisoners, and those who experience marginalization. That the Church's prayer and its active nearness give them comfort and assistance in hope and strength and courage in defending human dignity.
The worldwide hour of Eucharistic adoration is one of two initiatives for the Year of Faith, announced on May 28 by the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization.

COMMENT: after Fr. Raymond's Homily, pre-echo of Pope Francis

Behind and prior to every vocation to the priesthood or the consecrated life there is always someone’s powerful and intense prayer: a grandmother’s, a grandfather’s, a mother’s, a father’s, a community’s... This is why Jesus said: “Pray to the Lord of the harvest,” that is, God the Father, “that he might send workers for the harvest!” (Matthew 9:38).

Vocations are born in prayer and from prayer; and only in prayer can they persevere and bear fruit. I would like to underscore this today, which is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Let us pray in particular for the new priests of the Diocese of Rome, whom I had the joy to ordain this morning. And let us invoke Mary’s intercession. Today there were 10 young men who said “Yes” to Jesus and were ordained priests this morning... This is beautiful! Let us invoke Mary’s intercession, she who is the Woman of “Yes.” Mary said “Yes” her whole life! She learned to recognize Jesus’ voice from the time she carried him in her womb. Mary our Mother, help us to recognize Jesus’ voice always better and to follow it to walk along the path of life! Thank you.

Church authenticates interpretation of Scripture, Pope reminds Biblical Commission

Pope Francis: The centre of our faith is not just a book, it is a salvation history

Pope Francis: The centre of our faith is not just a book, it is a salvation history | Pope Francis, Bible

  • This morning, the Holy Father received the members of the Pontifical Biblical Commission with their president, Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, at the conclusion of their annual plenary assembly, on the theme of 'Inspiration and Truth in the Bible'.
  • In his address to them, the Pope emphasized that this theme "affects not only the individual believer but the whole Church, for the Church's life and mission are founded on the Word of God, which is the soul of theology as well as the inspiration of all of Christian existence."
  • "Sacred Scripture is the written testimony of the divine Word, the canonical memory that attests to the event of Revelation. However, the Word of God precedes the Bible and surpasses it. That is why the centre of our faith isn't just a book, but a salvation history and above all a person, Jesus Christ, the Word of God made flesh. It is precisely because the Word of God embraces and extends beyond Scripture that, in order to properly understand it, the Holy Spirit's constant presence, who guides us 'to all truth' is necessary. It is necessary to place ourselves within the great Tradition that has, with the Holy Spirit's assistance and the Magisterium's guidance, recognized the canonical writings as the Word that God addresses to his people, who have never ceased meditating upon it and discovering inexhaustible riches from it."
  • The pontiff recalled that Vatican Council II repeated this very clearly in the dogmatic constitution Dei Verbum. "All of what has been said about the way of interpreting Scripture is subject finally to the judgement of the Church, which carries out the divine commission and ministry of guarding and interpreting the word of God. In fact, Sacred Scripture is the Word of God in that it is written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Sacred Tradition, instead, transmits the Word of God in its entirety, entrusted by Christ the Lord and by the Holy spirit to the Apostles and their successors, so that these, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, might faithfully preserve it with their preaching, might expound and propound it."
  • "The interpretation of Sacred Scriptures cannot be just an individual academic effort, but must always be compared to, inserted within, and authenticated by the living tradition of the Church. This norm is essential in identifying the proper and reciprocal relationship between the exegesis and the Magisterium of the Church. The texts that God inspired were entrusted to the Community of believers, the Church of Christ, to nourish the faith and to guide the life of charity."

The Bishop of Rome bid the members of the Biblical Commission farewell, thanking them for their work and expressing the desire that this Year of Faith "may help to make the light of Sacred Scripture shine within the hearts of the faithful."
