 "Do you remember when you were little you said to Me, 'Be transfigured, be transfigured before my eyes, Lord.' You trusted Me. Off you went to the mountain of solitude and you heard My voice. You saw Me then in another way. It was also love that transfigured Me before My apostles. Always see love at the source of everything that comes from God. There is love and there is hate - nothing else. Two roots: God and the devil. Man with his free will takes his choice of the fruit. 
Be on the watch for the motive of your actions and remember that I am stretching out a helping hand. And keep watch on your lower nature, the part that runs down your neighbour made in My image. Give the kind of affection that comforts. You know what I mean - the word, the glance. I am in all ways of loving, just as Satan is in all ways of wounding. You see the source? You see the fruit? Choose, and always be ready to choose Me. This is what it is to be always in love. It's the direct route to Me. It passes through death and leads you into My arms."

And in turn a fuller passage is alive, giving voice to the seeds already growing, "You aren't a little church all by yourself. You are part of the great activity of Christ in the breath of the Spirit."

''When you are at My feet praying or meditating, why not be one in spirit with all the pure in heart who are praying and meditating? You aren't a little church all by yourself. You are part of the great activity of Christ in the breath of the Spirit. And in isolating yourself you would break the chain. So be linked together with-other fervent people and aware of My desire for you all .to be one. You remember My seamless robe?
Become humble enough to lose yourself in everyone else and eager enough for merits to seek to benefit by the merits of your brothers, since I permit this. I am the Father who has found a way to help His children get rich quickly. And having explained this to them, I wait for them to profit by it, for I suffer more than they do from their poverty. My little girl, you don't see how poor you are. If your eyes were opened, how careful you would be to cover your dress with someone else's garment in order to be pleasing in My sight.
Do you want to think more often of this daily union with all My Christians in the world at this moment? The suffering ones, the persecuted, the abandoned, those in exile and in prison, those who are martyred for My Name's sake, the souls in ruined bodies who continue to bless Me, to serve Me and to call Me with all their love right to their very last breath? Unite with them so that you may lose nothing of all this. Try to grasp the fact that these new treasures bring you ever nearer to Me. This is your goal: to reach Me. And I am so eager to have you that I stoop down, stretching out My two hands to you. Don't turn away. It's the proud who refuse a free gift. How I long for you to do Me the favour of accepting My help. I'll be even tempted to say, 'Thank you!' "

       Moschus, John (c.550-619 or 634), retired to the monastery of St. Theodosius, near Jerusalem in 575. He later traveled extensively with friend Sophronius and visited numerous monasteries in Egypt, Mount Sinai, Antioch, Cyprus, and Rome. His personal experience of the monastic life along with his travels abroad brought about his well-known Pratum Spirituale. Spiritual Meadow.

Repent and return to the Lord
Repent and return to the fear of the Lord your God; hold firmly to fasting and prayer, to supplication and contrite tears. Give me the occasion to praise you: I long to lift your good works in sacrifice to God with the sweet fragrance of your fasting, almsgiving, prayer, and compassion for the poor. Then, in union with my brethren the angels, I shall be joyful of countenance; then will the Holy Spirit come down upon you, and you will forthwith be counted among the righteous and holy people who are to hear a joyful verdict on the day of judgment.
Turn back to the Lord, Christian soul, by that repentance which is the readiest path to him and is pleasing in his sight. What is repentance? To repent is to leave your sin, to forsake your craving and abandon your former way of life. It means that you must undertake self-discipline by frequent fasting and constant prayer, and serve God in compunction, never wearying night or day. Make it your business to love the poor, for this is better in the Lord's sight than sacrifice. Retrench your bodily luxuries, satisfying your soul instead, and purify yourself of your stains, that you may know the sweetness of the Lord. Then the Lord's light will shine down on you, and you will be safe from the temptations of the enemy, for the Lord has promised to welcome those who come to him and to show them his mercy.
Now listen carefully: you must stop accumulating worldly things, and give up excessive eating and drinking here on earth, otherwise you, will forfeit what the Lord has promised to the good and righteous, So your alms deeds will even now be building you a spiritual house, and your lamp will shine in the kingdom of heaven with the oil of your kindness. You must believe that word which our-Lord spoke in the holy gospel: I am gentle and humble and my burden is light; come to me, you whose load is heavy, and I will make it lighter for you. O poor soul, your sins are many, but God's mercy is greater than the sins of all the world. Draw near to God's forgiveness and mercy, and he will send the light of his Spirit on you. Wash away your sins with tears, and it will redound to your advantage.
Look now, I have explained everything to you clearly, and given you repentance as your way of life; it will bring you near to the Lord, and will yield you the fruit of paradise to taste. Clothe the poor in your own garment to protect them from the winter's cold; fill their bellies with food as you multiply your own fasts. Repent and return to the Lord and approach his great mercy, because he has promised it to those who call upon him. Remember, Christian soul, that our Lord has warned us: No one knows when his time will come. Run swiftly, then, in pursuit of salvation, and offer your sacrifice. Labour to acquire patience, humility, a silent tongue, purity, and love of the poor. Strive to gamer righteousness. If you do all this, good things will come your way. Praise and honour be to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, forever. Amen.

A bright cloud overshadowed them, and seeing within it Jesus the Savoir with Moses and Elijah, the disciples were filled with great fear.
Of old when Moses saw God he experienced the divine darkness, indicating the symbolic nature of the law; for as Paul has written, the law contained only a shadow of the things to come, not the reality itself. In the past Israel could not look at the transient glory on the face of Moses; but we, beholding the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces, are being transformed from one degree of glory to another by the Lord who is the Spirit. The cloud, therefore, that overshadowed the disciples was not one of threatening darkness but of light; for the mystery hidden from past ages has been revealed to show us perpetual and eternal glory. Moses and Elijah, representing the law and the prophets, stood by the Saviour because he whom the law and the prophets proclaimed was present in Jesus, the giver of life.

And a voice from the cloud said: This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. The voice of the Father came from the cloud of the Spirit: This is my beloved Son. He who is seen in human form, who became man only yesterday, who lives humbly in the midst of us, and whose face is now shining, is he who is. This is my beloved Son, the eternal, the only begotten of the only God, he who proceeds timelessly and eternally from me, his Father; who did not begin to exist after me, but is from me and with me and in me from all eternity.

It was by the Father's good pleasure that his only begotten Son and Word became incarnate; it was by the Father's good pleasure that the salvation of the world was achieved through his only begotten Son; it was the Father's good pleasure which brought about the union of the whole universe in his only begotten Son. For humanity is a microcosm linking in itself all visible and invisible being, sharing as it does in the nature of both, and so it must surely have pleased the Lord, the creator and ruler of the universe, for divinity and humanity and thus all creation to be united in his only begotten and consubstantial Son, so that God might be all in all.

This is my Son, the radiance of my glory, who bears the stamp of my own nature, through whom I created the angels, through whom the vault of heaven was made firm and the earth established. He upholds the universe by his powerful word, and by the Spirit which proceeds from his mouth, that is the life-giving and guiding Spirit. Listen to him. Whoever receives him, receives me who sent him by the authority not of a stern master but of a father. As a man he is sent, but as God he abides in me and I in him. Whoever refuses to honour my only begotten Son refuses to honour me, his Father who sent him. Listen to him, for he has the words of eternal life.

Bodily life is sustained by ordinary bread; spiritual life is sustained by Christ through the sacrament of his body and blood He gives believers immortality of both body and soul; and satisfies our hunger and thirst for ever.

Our ancestors ate manna in the desert; as it is written, "He gave them bread from heaven to eat." Wishing to persuade Christ to perform the kind of miracle that would provide them with bodily nourishment, the people in their insatiable greed called to mind the manna. What was the reply of our Lord Jesus, the infinite wisdom of God? It was not Moses who gave you bread. In other words, "Moses did not give you the true bread. On the contrary, everything that happened in his time was a prefiguration of what is happening now. Moses represented God, the real leader of the spiritual Israelites, while that bread typified myself, who have come down from heaven and who am the true bread which gives genuine nourishment."
Our Lord refers to himself as the true
. bread not because the manna was something illusory, but because it was only a type and a shadow, and not the reality it signified.

This bread, being the Son of the living Father, is life by its very nature, and accordingly gives life to all Just as earthly bread sustains the fragile substance of the flesh and prevents it from falling into decay, so Christ quickens the soul through the power of the Spirit, and also preserves even the body for immortality. Through Christ resurrection from the dead and bodily immortality have been gratuitously bestowed upon the human race.

Jesus said to the people: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." He did not say "the bread of bodily nourishment," but "the bread of life." For when everything had been reduced to a condition of spiritual death, the Lord gave us life through himself, who is bread because, as we believe, the leaven in the dough of our humanity was baked through and through by the fire of his divinity. He is the bread not of this ordinary life, but of a very different kind of life which death will never cut short

Whoever believes in this bread will never hunger, will never be famished for want of hearing the word of God; nor will such a person be parched by spiritual thirst through lack of the waters of baptism and the consecration imparted by the Spirit The unbaptized, deprived of the refreshment afforded by the sacred water, suffer thirst and great aridity. The baptized, on the other hand, being possessed of the Spirit, enjoy its continual consolation

This title is not a Japanese of Chinese word. This is what the Israelites will say in today first reading when they will see "In the morning a dew lay all about the camp, and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground. On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, "what is this" (in Hebrew manhu and from it came the word manna).
This "manhu" is also called "bread from heaven" "God rained manna upon them for food; bread from heaven he gave them". Psalm 77, 78:24
St. John 6: 30-59 will mention the manna when he will speak about the bread of life, which is the body of Christ. "What sing can you do, that we may see and believe in you? ... Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat." So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world...I am the bread of life ... because I came down from heaven ... The Jews murmured about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven," ...Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves ...I am the living of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died ... I am bread that came down from heaven, whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world ..."
This "manhu" will be then the symbol of our communion of the body of Christ at mass. In fact Theophylact (c.1050-1109) a theologian and archbishop of Ochrida in Bulgaria and who was using the Slavonic language, said: "Our Lord refers to himself as the true bread not because the manna was something illusory, but because it was only a type and shadow, and not the reality it signified".

And he continues "Jesus said to the people: "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall never hunger ... He did not say "the bread of bodily nourishement," but " the bread of life. You will be tempted to see in the Holy Communion just a kind of practice. You come to mass, then you share with all people the body and blood of Christ, without just thinking of what this communion impact.
In the life of the Israelite this "manhu" was a sign that they are loved, cared and chosen by God. As long as they had this bread they will feel, despite some grumble from time to time, as the people of God. This same "manhu" made from them one body with the God of the Old Testament.
Does the communion make from you the same?
One body with the God of the New Testament, Jesus!
One body with the people that share the same bread of heaven!
One world, one community, one church, one family!

Remember these words of St. Paul: "A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying. If we discern ourselves, we would not be under judgment." 1cor. 11: 28-32

Subject: The Mirror of the Eucharist

The Mirror of the Eucharist - Sun 18 B 
  • The Eucharist is, of course the most precious jewel among the gifts of our faith. But there are many facets to that precious jewel. It is the GREATEST of the Sacraments; it is the most WONDERFUL of the sacraments; It is the most POWERFUL, of the sacraments; It is the most BEAUTIFUL and INSPIRING of the sacraments, and it is so many other things for us.  It sums up the whole meaning of God’s relations with his children.  It is bursting with the promise of an unspeakable destiny of communion with God for us.
  • But today we would do well to concentrate on another quite different aspect of the Eucharist; one that’s brought to our attention in today’s first reading. This aspect can hardly be described under any of these terms.  It is neither wonderful nor beautiful nor loving nor inspiring.  The only word to describe it is perhaps – “challenging”.  I don’t mean challenging in the sense that it challenges our faith; although it certainly does that!  From the very first mention Jesus made of eating his flesh and drinking his blood it has been a challenge to our faith.  But there is another way in which it challenges us who do believe in it still further. I mean the challenge we read about in the Book of Exodus. Today’s first reading is about the gift of the Manna in the desert foreshadowing the gift of the Eucharist in the life of the Church ever after.  We read there that when God gave Moses this gift he said that it was given, not so much to feed them as to test them; to test whether it would induce them to follow his Laws.  Now this character of a “Test” is still very much an important aspect of the role of the Eucharist in our lives.  God has given us this unspeakable gift!  Yes, we believe in it!  But do we appreciate it? Do we partake of it?  Do we live by it?  Or do we neglect it?  The Eucharist is a kind of Mirror of our souls.  Jesus looks into that mirror, and he longs and hopes to see the frequent reflection of our faces there.  The original Manna was given to test whether the children of the O.T. would follow the Old Commandments.  The New Manna of the Eucharist is given to test whether we, the Children of the New Testament, will follow the New Commandment To love him as he has loved us.
  • Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you cannot have life in you

COMMENT: SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY Priest (1786-1859)

The sense of presence in the Lord in the pages of "HE AND i" is to be encountered in the  Cure d'Ars.
In the communion of souls of special prayer we recognize St. John Mary Vianney who has turned as to St. Francis and St. Collette
And I ask, why St. Collette?
The answer is found in the words. "How I love those noble souls.
Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Collette saw Our Lord and spoke to him as we speak to one another."


The translation is clarified by the Capuchin Friars Website.

St. John Mary Vianney as a member of the Secular Franciscan Order had a great appreciation of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Collette, a reformer of the Poor Clares. This is evident in the instruction on prayer, which follows:

  • Consider, children, a Christian's treasure is not on earth, it is in heaven.
  • Well then, our thoughts should turn to where our treasure is. 
  • Man has a noble task: that o prayer and love. To pray and to love, that is the happiness of man on earth.
  • Prayer is nothing else than union with God. When the heart is pure and united with God it is consoled and filled with sweetness; it is dazzled by a marvellous light.
  • In this intimate union, God and the soul are like two pieces of wax moulded into one; they cannot any more be separated. It is a very wonderful thing, this union of God with his insignificant creature; happiness passing all understanding.
  • We had deserved to be left incapable of praying; but God in his goodness has permitted us to speak to him. Our prayer is an incense that is delightful to God.
  • My children, your hearts are small, but prayer enlarges them and renders them capable of loving God.
  • Prayer is a foretaste of heaven, an overflowing of heaven. It never leaves us without sweetness; it is like honey, it descends into the soul and sweetens everything.
  • In a prayer well made, troubles vanish like snow under the rays of the sun.
  • Prayer makes time seem to pass quickly, and so pleasantly that one fails to notice how long it is.
  • When I was parish priest of Bresse, once, almost all my colleagues were ill, and as I made the long journeys I used to pray to God, and, I assure you, the time did not seem long to me.
  • There are those who lose themselves in prayer, like fish in water, because they are absorbed in God. There is no division in their hearts. How I love those noble souls.

  • As for ourselves, how often do we come to church with out thinking what we are doing or for what we are going to ask.

I cannot help being struck by the similarity of the presentation of the Community in the photograph on your Blog with that of Leonardi Da Vinci's Last Supper:
six disciples either side of centre, meal prepared, with even the stools giving the effect of the trestle table!

I have an alabaster model of the Da Vinci and thus look upon it each day. I shall similarly treasure this photograph!

Saint Waldef

Cistercian abbot. Of noble birth, St Waldef was born in 1100 and grew up in the Scottish court.
He could have become a court cleric, but chose the monastic life, becoming an Austin canon at Nostell in Yorkshire.  In 1134, he became prior of Kirkham. In 1140 he was a favourite to become Archbishop of York but King Stephen prevented this because he felt he would be too sympathetic to Scotland.

St Waldef wanted to bring the Cistercians at Rievaulx and the Austins at Kirkham together, but the canons objected strongly. In 1149 he became abbot of Melrose, taking over from someone who had a notorious temper. St Waldef developed a reputation for great kindness, gentleness and humility.  He went on to found monasteries at Cultram and Kinross. In 1159 he was asked to be bishop of St Andrews but he refused as he knew death was near.

St Waldef was never formally canonised but a popular cult grew around him until the Reformation. During his life, many wonders were said to have taken place including visions at Christmas and Easter and miracles of multiplying food.

Friday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Jeremiah 26:1-9.
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this message came from the LORD: . . .
 And all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of the LORD. 

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 13:54-58.
He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. . . .
 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house."
And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.


The Monks wary of the conventional practices, was the theme taken up by the Abbot  General.

Sr. Noreen gave us a first hand impression of the Dublin Eucharistic Congress.
Among the wealth of addresses and workshops, she especially tool to heart the ever resonating "WOMAN OF THE EUCHARIST" by Timothy O'Donnell from Christendom College, Virginia.
The PDF documents are regretfully something of a  hurdle, but not be deterred . We could hope for a Kindle book format. Noreen's enthusiasm on Timothy O'Donnell'address and John Paul II's two documents prompts me imbibe the Spirit. See after ... this much editing and highlighting will take time - present pause.

Christendom College President Dr. Timothy O'Donnell delivered three talks at the 50th International Eucharistic Congress held June 10-17 in Dublin, Ireland. O'Donnell spoke to priests and laity alike on the relevance of the Eucharist to the priesthood, the life of Mary, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Eucharistic Congress, which was presided over by Marc Cardinal Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, attracted over 70,000 people."There were people from France, India, the Philippines, South America—from all over," O'Donnell said. "It truly was international."
Participants at the Congress heard from theologians, religious, priests, bishops, and cardinals from across the globe on topics relating to the theme of 2012 Congress, "Communion with Christ and with one another." Even Pope Benedict the XVI addressed the attendees via television broadcast. O'Donnell said that being a part of the congress was an incredible experience were he witnessed "a vibrant living Church."
"I saw how the Eucharist draws us together," he said. "I think everyone who participated experienced the Church's universality and came closer to the Heart of Christ."


O'Donnell's second lecture examined Mary's unique role as, what Blessed John Paul II called, the "Woman of the Eucharist." He explained that Mary was constantly devoted to the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus, which is exactly what the Eucharist is.
"Mary conceives through the Holy Spirit, and at Mass, the Sacrament is confected through the same agent, the Holy Spirit," he said. "As Mary kneels before the Angel in awe and pronounces her fiat, she becomes at that moment a living tabernacle, holding the Creator of the universe within… So Mary, having received our Lord into her body, 'goes in haste' to bring Him to others. It was the first Eucharistic procession."
