Pope's visit to bring hope to Church in Germany
Rome, Italy, Aug 26, 2011 / 03:09 pm
Archbishop Jean-Claude Perisset, the apostolic nuncio to Germany,
has said that the Pope's upcoming trip to the country
will bring hope and strength for the new evangelization” in Benedict XVI's native land.
The Sept. 22-25 trip will be Benedict XVI's third visit to Germany since he was elected Pope.
His first visit to Germany brought him to Cologne for World Youth Day 2005.
During that trip he visited the cities of Berlin, Erfurt, Freiburg and Etzelsbach.
In an interview with the German Catholic news agency KNA,
Archbishop Perisset said the number of Catholics expected to attend
the papal Mass at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin continues to rise.
“The fact that many Catholics from other states and from abroad want to participate
in this celebration of the Eucharist is a positive sign of the unity of Germany,” he said.
“Berlin is not ‘a pagan city,’ as some say,
but rather the Church is present in the capital and is very accepted,” the archbishop stated.
The Church “should proclaim the message of Christ,
and the Pope wants to encourage the Church to carry out this task.
“I am sure she will,” he added.
